Modern Las Vegas has morphed into a gaudy mismash of attractions, but just a few decades back it was truly an oasis, with bits of desert meeting the curb of 'the strip.' The Vegas of the 1950's wrested the top night clubs monopoly from the coasts, creating a new, vibrant destination where people could practically touch the stars; stars like Sinatra, Martin, Lawford, Durante, Skelton, Armstrong, etc. The Sands became part of the mix in 1952, and would be a star stop for most of its 45-year run.
> See the 1960 movie "Ocean's 11?" One of the casinos 'hit' was the Sands.
> Heard of Sinatra's "Rat Pack?" Formed at the Sands.
> Remember Elvis' big hit "Hound Dog?" Elvis first heard it at the Sands.
Oh, yeah... the mug. Well, it's in great shape, even retaining the little gold, oval sticker declaring "Made in China." That tells me it hasn't been used much, as that sticker would be gone after a very few dishwasher sessions. There are some very small breaks in the upper blue bar, but they look as though they were there before firing the glaze, and not cracks in the glazing itself. Otherwise, the cup looks really clean for being separated from its namesake for about 20 years, having no cracks or chips.
